In a senatorial race with implications for U.S. farming, Democrat Everett Wess and Republican Barry Moore are battling in Alabama, a key agriculture state. Alabama is a leading producer of various crops, including cotton, peanuts, timber, and sod.

The number of federal legislators with direct farming ties has decreased significantly, raising the question: Which of Alabama’s candidates best understands agriculture?

Wess, a former municipal court judge and private attorney, shared his perspective on farming with Farm Journal. Moore, a veteran and small business owner raised on a family farm, currently serves in the House of Representatives and is a member of the House Committee on Agriculture. He did not respond to Farm Journal's interview requests.

Wess was asked about his plans to continue the seat's involvement in agriculture policy. Moore, meanwhile, is squaring off against Wess in a race that could shape future farm representation in Washington.
