Grupo Modelo and Millfoods have announced a joint investment of MX$12 million for the third phase of the Ameyalli program, bringing the total capital mobilized in the Bajío region to MX$28.3 million by 2029, along with other partners. This initiative promotes sustainable agricultural practices, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation.
Water Savings and Regenerative Agriculture
Created by Grupo Modelo in 2020, Ameyalli seeks to restore soil fertility, enhance soils’ water and nutrient retention capacity, and strengthen productive ecosystems. To date, the program has implemented regenerative agriculture practices on over 1,600 ha of barley, corn, sorghum, wheat, and oats, benefiting 35 farming families and saving a cumulative 3 million cubic meters of water.
“In six years, Ameyalli has shown that caring for water and soil is part of caring for the value chain of Mexican beer. It is not an isolated effort: it is a long-term relationship focused on farmers and the Mexican countryside, with clear actions and results that can be measured and verified. What began as a Grupo Modelo initiative now brings in other companies, and the arrival of Millfoods shows that water security is built through collaboration,” stated Soqui Calderón, Sustainability Director, Grupo Modelo.
With Millfoods' incorporation as a strategic partner, Ameyalli will expand its reach in the Bajío.
"We stand between the countryside and industry. We receive grain from producers and transform it into ingredients for other companies, so we know that the quality of what we deliver begins in the field, long before it reaches the mill. Supporting farmers is also caring for what we do," said Pilar Gutiérrez, Director General, Millfoods.
Cross-Sector Partnerships for Water Security
The third phase will continue to involve the Cauce Bajío Water Fund, civil society organizations, and government agencies. The partnership aims to consolidate a climate resilience model to address water challenges in the agroindustrial sector, utilizing technical interventions and monitoring of water indicators to strengthen water security in productive watersheds.
"The transition toward more efficient agriculture is essential for the future of the countryside and water security in the Bajío," noted Oscar Leal, Director General, Cauce Bajío Water Fund. He added that private sector support has been crucial in developing the Ameyalli model, and farmers' commitment was key to achieving its results.
