The University of Missouri officially unveiled four new agriculture research facilities on Friday, alongside the state's commitment to easing fuel costs for farmers and truckers.

Challenges Faced by Farmers and Ranchers

Anita Vanderwert, representing the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, emphasized the pressing issues farmers and ranchers are encountering:

  • Rising diesel fuel costs exceeding $6 per gallon
  • Unpredictable weather patterns fluctuating between droughts and floods

University of Missouri's Response

Christopher Daubert, vice chancellor and dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR), explained the purpose of these facilities:

  • Developing new soybean varieties resistant to climate challenges
  • Addressing issues in beef production and winemaking

State Investment in Agriculture

Chris Chinn, Director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture, acknowledged the daily challenges faced by the industry. He highlighted the state's $45 million investment in these research facilities as a testament to supporting Missouri farmers.

Governor's Executive Order

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed an executive order on Friday, temporarily easing diesel fuel restrictions until the end of the year. This move aims to provide some relief to farmers and truckers grappling with rising fuel costs.
