Chris Jones Rallies Voters in Dubuque Days Before Election Day
Democratic candidate for Iowa secretary of agriculture, Chris Jones, campaigned in Dubuque on Saturday, joining the race to win support before Election Day.
Jones made several stops across Dubuque, including a visit to the Dubuque Farmers Market, where he engaged with voters and vendors. The campaign focuses on water quality and crop diversity as key issues.
Pat Hayes, a supporter, emphasized the personal significance of water quality, stating, “We have to go out of state to find places to fish or swim... because the water here. They’re afraid they’re gonna get sick.”
Jones argues that Iowa’s heavy reliance on corn and soybeans hinders efforts to tackle nitrate pollution, advocating for more crop diversification to create a resilient system.
In response, Mike Naig’s campaign released a statement highlighting the contrasting views:
“The contrast in this race couldn’t be clearer... His plans will put family farms out of business and drive up gas and grocery prices for Iowa families... Jones has a long history of insulting Iowa farmers.”
The statement also mentioned Jones’s previous statements downplaying farming's challenges, quoting a blog post titled “Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be farmers.” It emphasized Naig’s role as a fourth-generation farmer.
