Clayton Tucker Declares Victory in Texas Agriculture Commissioner Race

Supporters gathered at the Texas Panhandle Democratic headquarters in Amarillo as Democrat Clayton Tucker declared victory over Republican opponent Nate Sheets in the race for Texas agriculture commissioner.

Tucker announced plans for a smooth transition from outgoing Commissioner Sid Miller and outlined several key agricultural priorities moving forward, including combating screwworms, curbing data center water usage, and protecting local food supplies.

During the watch party, Tucker emphasized his goal to unite rural and urban communities while addressing financial hurdles that make it difficult for aspiring producers to enter the agricultural sector.

“I hear them. I lived that experience.” Tucker said. “If I wasn’t born into my family’s farm, there is no way in the world I could afford to get in. It’s just not. I wouldn’t be able to do it. The other bit is we really need to start making our food local again. We can’t import our problems away.”

Tucker noted that rising expenses for land, fuel, fertilizer, and feed have created significant barriers for independent producers trying to operate without family financial backing.

To help grow more producers and ranchers, Tucker said he intends to address input costs directly and work alongside other state leaders on legislative solutions.

“We will be really working with the new governor, lieutenant governor, our new senator as well to get a good farm bill passed and maybe get a Texas farm bill... I will love to work with her to get a Texas farm bill passed as well,” Tucker said.

Tucker added that lowering critical input costs and securing state-level legislative support will remain central to protecting family farms across the state.
