President Donald Trump announced more diesel relief could be coming to farmers through a new deal with Russia. This is the second move from the president in the last two weeks aimed at bringing prices down, just weeks before the midterm election.

Although only about 2% of Iowans are farmers, a new study from the Common Sense Institute reveals the economic impact extends far beyond the agriculture industry. Candidates and the Trump administration are highlighting lowering the price of diesel as a key issue, potentially staying top of mind for voters in the coming midterms.

Agriculture's Economic Reach in Iowa

According to the study, the agriculture industry's footprint is significantly larger on Iowa’s economy than previously estimated by the federal government. The Common Sense Institute finds that the industry supports approximately:

  • 27% of all Iowa jobs
  • Over half a million people
  • A third of the state’s GDP

“We found that the industry, self-agriculture, supports about 1 in 4 Iowa jobs and roughly a third of the state’s GDP,” explained Andrzej Wieciorkowski, senior analyst at the Common Sense Institute.

This year has been particularly challenging for Iowa farmers, with rising prices due to tariffs, trade deals, and tight budgets.

Federal Actions to Address Diesel Costs

Diesel prices have recently surged due to the conflict in Iran, prompting the administration to take action. Recent moves include:

  • New regulations for red dye diesel to reduce costs
  • A trade deal with Russia, expected to last until April of next year

Last week, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins visited Iowa, stating that federal relief is anticipated to save farmers millions.

“Our numbers show about $640 million savings for the farmers alone during harvest season. At the federal level, that’s about a quarter that is taken off the cost of diesel,” Rollins noted.

However, these efforts are temporary solutions.
