Oregon Farming Rights: GOP Proposes Constitutional Protection
By Alex Baumhardt/Oregon Capital Chronicle
On August 4, 2026, State Senator Christine Drazan, R-Canby, and the Republican gubernatorial candidate, organized an event at White’s Country Meats in Gresham to unveil a proposed amendment to Oregon's Constitution. The amendment aims to safeguard fishing, hunting, and farming rights.
Countering Animal Rights Initiative
In response to a failed ballot initiative from animal rights activists seeking to ban hunting, fishing, and animal slaughter in Oregon, Republican leaders are introducing their own constitutional amendment. This initiative guarantees the right to "hunt, fish, gather wild foods, and raise animals or crops."
The Proposal
Drazan leads the campaign to enshrine these rights in Oregon's Constitution, emphasizing the importance of preserving traditional activities and the state's agricultural heritage. The proposal will be referred to voters for their approval.
