Cattle Herd Expansion: Arkansas Tech Secures New Property
Arkansas Tech University's cattle owned will soon have a significant expansion with access to a new 250-acre property, courtesy of the Duffield family of Russellville.
Agreement Details
The Duffield family has entered into a 30-year agreement, at no cost to Arkansas Tech, granting access to their pasture land located on the south side of Russellville. The property will be prepared to accommodate the university's cattle, with a planned move in spring 2027.
"Our family has a long history with Arkansas Tech," said Luke Duffield, "This was an opportunity to give back to a university and a community that has been so good to our family over the years."
Continuous Learning and Development
While some cattle will be housed at the ATU farm on the north side of campus, the university aims to rotate them regularly for hands-on learning opportunities. The on-campus farm facilities, including the ATU Greenhouses, Dr. James “Jim” Collins Agriculture Classroom, Farm Credit Agriculture Building, and cattle/swine handling areas, will remain crucial for student learning.
Commercial Development and Revenue Generation
Arkansas Tech's goal is to explore commercial development options for the property it owns east of North Arkansas Avenue. By securing this new property, the university aims to diversify its revenue streams, keeping tuition affordable for students. The development plan also includes the potential establishment of restaurants and retail outlets accessible to students, faculty, staff, and nearby residents.
