This Election Cycle: A Web of Interconnected Issues

This election cycle has highlighted the interconnection of a variety of issues that impact voters everywhere. Fuel pricing, food access, climate decline, and changing policies stand alone yet influence each other.

Natalie Ziegler, a former member of Maryland House of Delegates and current 2026 Midterm candidate, emphasizes the impact of agriculture funding cuts on food safety. She expresses concern over a sewage spill in Montgomery County earlier this year, stating, "We saw that with oysters...it’s scary to be messing around with [food safety]."

Ziegler also addresses the dilemma of high fuel and diesel prices while commodity prices remain low. Maryland’s average gas price on election day is $3.99, while diesel averages $6.32, a significant increase from last year’s $2.95 and $3.65 respectively.

Shelby Watson-Hampton, a farmer and agricultural specialist, notes emergency state interventions like allowing off-road tax-exempt dyed diesel for crop transportation due to the rising fuel prices. She explains, "For those farmers that sell directly to consumers...they likely do have to increase prices."

J.P. Krahel, a Loyola economics professor, attributes voter uncertainty to these interconnected issues. "All these things feed on each other. Because of uncertainty, diesel prices grow...it’s suffused throughout the economy in ways [all] people can relate to."
