El Nino threatens Zambia's agriculture
Zambia is preparing for another challenging farming season due to the impact of El Nino, which is expected to bring irregular rainfall, raising concerns about food production and prices.
Extreme Heat and Forecasts
The extreme heat experienced during October has already given a preview of the upcoming challenges for Zambian farmers. The meteorological department predicts below-normal rainfall in the southern regions, while the northern areas are expected to receive heavier rains.
Resilience and Drought Recovery
Following the devastating 2024 drought, the Zambian government reports improved harvests, strengthening the country's position. However, access to irrigation and support remains uneven.
"That shows you that despite the fact that we experienced drought two years ago, we are still in a resilient position... we are seeing opportunities to invest more in agriculture and tap into the low-hanging fruits of what agriculture can benefit, such as irrigation." - Balewa Zyuulu, Spokesperson for Zambian Ministry of Agriculture
Challenges for Small-Scale Farmers
Small-scale farmers face significant obstacles, particularly in accessing irrigation systems. Oliver Mhembere, a small-scale farmer, highlights the financial limitations that prevent many farmers from installing irrigation systems like drip or even basic infrastructure like boreholes.
Government Commitment to Resilience
The government has expressed its commitment to enhancing resilience against future climate shocks.
Iran's Negotiations and U.S. Engagement
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi dismissed reports of possible U.S. meetings as media speculation. He stated that Iran would decide on direct or indirect negotiations after the U.S. accepted Iran's conditions.
Araghchi revealed that an Iranian delegation had traveled to Qatar for further discussions, with his aide continuing consultations with mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
Iran's conditions include the recognition of a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.
