Georgia Democrat Ossoff Wins Reelection to Senate, AP Projects (8:21 pm ET)

Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff has defeated GOP Rep. Mike Collins, securing a second term representing Georgia in the U.S. Senate, according to the Associated Press' projection.

Ossoff, a member of the Senate Appropriations' agriculture subcommittee, marks this as the Democrats' significant early victory. The party aims to maintain or flip seats to regain control of the Senate.

Key States to Watch

Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina, Michigan, and Maine are states under close scrutiny as Republicans strive to retain the Senate majority. Democrats are expected to take control of the House.

Ossoff's Priorities and Background

Considered a potential 2028 presidential contender, Ossoff won his initial Senate term in 2021, defeating then-Sen. David Perdue. He has highlighted his efforts to reduce Indian tariffs on U.S. peanuts and proposed legislation to exclude crop insurance indemnity payments from farmers' taxable income after disasters or revenue losses.

When asked about improving farm economic conditions, Ossoff emphasized addressing "abysmal labor and environmental practices in Mexican agriculture."

Farm Bill Challenges

Ossoff echoed the consensus among ag policy watchers that the inability to pass a comprehensive, five-year farm bill since 2018 is concerning. He expressed fear that the separation of commodity and nutrition titles could weaken the bipartisan support traditionally driving the farm bill forward.

Other Election Results

  • Ohio: Democratic Rep. Shontel Brown wins reelection, aiming for a leadership position in the House Agriculture Committee.
  • Senate Agriculture Committee: Democrats Sen. Cory Booker (NJ) and Rep. Sanford Bishop (GA), both top figures in ag policy, secure new terms.
