EU Neighbors Shun Kyiv’s Plea to Free Trapped Grain

EU neighbors, specifically Poland and Romania, have rejected Ukraine's request for assistance in exporting trapped grain through Europe. This comes as the Black Sea blockade enters its third month, potentially leading to a global food crisis.

Ukraine's Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi visited Brussels to appeal to EU counterparts for help, requesting €1.1 billion to cover increased shipping costs and the ability to move more farm products. He expressed urgency, stating, "It's very, very critical."

However, Poland and Romania, key countries with essential infrastructure for enhancing shipping and storage capacity, have declined further assistance, citing priority concerns for their own farmers. Romania's agriculture minister, Barna Tánczos, emphasized this position, noting the combination of excess Ukrainian grain and low river levels on the Danube presents challenges.

This situation underscores the growing global concern regarding the potential impact on food security as Ukraine's next harvest approaches.
