Farm Financial Stress Continues as Loan Repayment Rates Decline

Nov 03, 2026

A policy advisor with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago states that agricultural credit conditions in the 7th district are anticipated to soften in 2027. David Oppedahl notes that many farmers continue to confront economic challenges.

"We’re still grappling with the aftermath of the trade disputes," he observes. "Farmland values remain strong, but the input costs remain a significant hurdle for farmers, with cash rents also affected."

Oppedahl highlights that farmers' debt levels remain elevated, despite recent commodity price improvements. "Many operators are unable to fully repay their loans, leading to loan extensions," he explains. "This period has been particularly challenging, with higher demand for agricultural loans compared to last year."

According to the latest survey of agricultural lending institutions, over 17 percent of producers carried over debt in 2026. The 7th district encompasses parts of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
