First Lewistown Harvest Train: Connecting Passengers with Central Montana Agriculture

The first Lewistown Harvest Train brought a unique experience to passengers, offering a closer look at Central Montana's agricultural landscape. Combining field demonstrations, local food, and youth programs, the event showcased the region's farming and ranching heritage aboard the vintage Charlie Russell Chew Choo.

A Community Effort

Organized by the Lewistown Area Chamber of Commerce, this inaugural Harvest Train combined elements of the traditional Ag Tour and Longest Table dinner. Bill Plouffe and his family, along with Fergus County Commissioner Jennifer Saunders, played pivotal roles in developing this event.

Agricultural Insights and Local Flavors

Passengers started their journey with livestock displays from the Plouffe family, sparking conversations about the daily efforts that bring food to their tables. The 2025 Fergus County report from MSU Extension highlights the area's agricultural success, with cash receipts from crops and livestock totaling approximately $149 million.

As the train chugged along, local musicians entertained passengers gathered at Hanover Boarding Station. Once aboard, attendees could observe agriculture in action through the train's windows. Each of the seven cars featured a Harvest Host, eager to share insights and answer questions.

Demonstrations and Delicious Dining

Demonstrations ranged from operating a combine and baler to herding sheep, repairing fences, and working with cattle. At the dining tables, passengers savored locally sourced fare prepared by Carpenter’s Luncheonette, Rising Trout Cafe, The Wrangler, and Main Street Treats. The meal featured ingredients grown and raised locally, including brisket from Montana RanchHers Beef Co. and flour from Lewistown Flour Company.

Attendees like Blake and Quincy Buechler, who traveled from Billings, were drawn by the food and the opportunity to support local businesses. Quincy expressed their appreciation for the event, emphasizing the importance of community engagement.
