Frederick County Grants Help First-Generation Farmers Grow

Karrington Anderson - October 15, 2026

Frederick County is leveraging grant funding to empower local farmers, supporting them in:

  • Investing in new equipment.
  • Expanding their operations.
  • Exploring innovative marketing strategies.

As highlighted in a NACo article, the Frederick County’s Agriculture Innovation Grant Program has awarded over $1.86 million to 82 agricultural projects since its launch in 2021. The program offers $250,000 annually, providing upfront capital for startup costs and infrastructure investments.

Stone Pillar Farm, a 20-acre regenerative farm run by the Fahrner family—first-generation farmers who started during the COVID-19 pandemic—is among the beneficiaries. They use the grants to upgrade equipment and build facilities for poultry processing, cold storage, and vegetable washing and packing.

The County is also exploring a Center for Farm Retail Innovation, offering shared processing facilities, kitchen space, and educational resources to aid farmers in developing value-added products and expanding their businesses.

This initiative underscores how strategic county investments can help agricultural businesses overcome startup hurdles and ensure long-term economic viability.
