From the Desk of the Regional Administrator: This Committee Reserves Agriculture’s Seat at the EPA Table

U.S. EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy (U.S. EPA)

LENEXA, KAN. (SEPT. 29, 2026) – During my tenure as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region 7 administrator, I've traveled across every state under my jurisdiction to convey a clear message: agriculture holds a place at the EPA table.

This is where the Farm, Ranch, and Rural Communities Committee (FRRCC) comes into play. For nearly two decades, FRRCC has ensured agriculture's voice is heard through its independent policy advice, information, and guidance to the Administrator. It remains the most effective avenue for agricultural input within the agency.

FRRCC offers insights and recommendations detailing the unique realities of farming and rural life. Past committees have shed light on compliance costs, permitting delays, and the unintended consequences of regulation on everyday farmers.

In July, Administrator Lee Zeldin appointed 21 new members to FRRCC. These individuals will collaborate with our agency over the next two years, aiming to develop practical solutions that foster resilient communities while preserving environmental integrity.

Each committee iteration is assigned specific charge topics to provide fresh perspectives and recommendations to the administrator. The current focus includes:

  • Integrating artificial intelligence and precision agriculture for more precise pesticide application.
  • Balancing conservation, nutrient pollution reduction, and long-term farm sustainability.

I'd like to welcome the 2026-2027 appointed FRRCC members from Region 7:

  • Stuart Swanson, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Galt, Iowa "I am honored to serve on EPA's Farm Ranch and Rural Communities Committee for the next two years," said Swanson. "The input provided by our committee will be invaluable in shaping programs and policies related to nutrient management, pesticide use, and water quality. I'm proud to represent the views of corn farmers and communities in my state and am excited to work with other members from across the country."

  • Chris Tanner, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Norton, Kansas
