Haiti - Agriculture: Distribution of Seeds to More Than 2,000 Farmers
Haiti is taking steps to revive agricultural production and combat food insecurity by distributing vegetable seeds to over 2,000 farmers in the South Department. This initiative is led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development (MARNDR) as part of the Resilient Agriculture for Food Security Project (PARSA), funded by the World Bank.
Key Points:
- Beneficiaries: More than 2,000 farmers in communes like Port-à-Piment, Chardonnières, Chantal, Saint-Jean-du-Sud, and others.
- Purpose: To support farmers in developing their operations, diversifying vegetable crops, and increasing local production.
- Seeds Distributed: Bell peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, spinach, lettuce, parsley, melons, leeks, and papayas.
- Implementation: In collaboration with Municipal Agricultural Offices (BAC), selecting 100 farmers per municipality to receive seed kits. In agricultural-focused municipalities with irrigation systems, the number increases to 200 beneficiaries.
- Impact: Enables farmers to establish "home gardens," promoting vegetable cultivation close to residence, improving dietary diversity, and enhancing food security.
The distribution aims to provide a localized solution to food insecurity by empowering households to produce their own vegetables and potentially sell surplus in local markets.
