ICE Operations Disrupt Kansas Agriculture Industry, KLA Reports
Officials with the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) have expressed concerns over recent federal immigration enforcement operations in southwest Kansas, which they say have disrupted meatpacking plant staffing and impacted supply chains.

Last week, reports emerged of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials present in communities like Dodge City and Garden City. These operations targeted undocumented immigrants with criminal records, but according to KLA CEO Matt Teagarden, the fear extends beyond undocumented workers. He noted that even legal, documented individuals are cautious about explaining their identities and backgrounds.
Impact on Kansas Agriculture
Kansas is a significant meat exporter, generating billions of dollars annually. The industry employs a substantial number of foreign workers, many of whom find the work suitable for both employers and employees. However, these recent operations have led to worker disruptions in meatpacking plants, with some canceling shifts due to staffing shortages.
“Folks that are legal, fully documented, are cautious about going out and being... just having to explain who they are and what they’re about,” Teagarden said.
