ICE Operations Disrupt Kansas Agriculture Industry, KLA Reports
Officials with the Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) state that recent federal immigration enforcement operations in southwest Kansas have significantly impacted the meatpacking industry, highlighting ongoing workforce challenges in agriculture.
According to KLA CEO Matt Teagarden, ice operations led to:
- Staffing shortages: Meatpacking plants in cities like Dodge City and Garden City experienced disruptions after a significant number of employees stayed home out of fear.
- Plant cancellations: Some plants canceled shifts due to lack of staff.
While ICE claims to target undocumented immigrants with criminal records, Teagarden emphasizes the impact extends beyond undocumented workers:
"Folks that are legal, fully documented, are cautious about going out and being... just having to explain who they are and what they’re about. And it’s not a comfortable conversation for them," he said.
The Kansas agriculture industry is a significant contributor to the state's economy, exporting billions of dollars' worth of meat annually. The sector heavily relies on workers from other countries, making it vulnerable to workforce instability.
