Agriculture's Economic Impact in Idaho

Idaho Farm Bureau Federation spokesperson Sean Ellis highlights the state's agricultural significance through a per-capita revenue figure.

"What it does more importantly is it shows elected officials and other Idahoans how important agriculture is in Idaho compared to other states," Ellis emphasized.

USDA Data Reveals Impressive Figures

According to USDA data, Idaho generated an impressive $11.95 billion in farm revenue in 2025. Dividing this by Idaho's population of 2.029 million that year results in a per-resident figure of $5,887.

This translates to agriculture contributing:

  • $44.5 billion, or 17%, to Idaho's total economic output.
  • One in every nine jobs, accounting for 12% of the state's GSP (Gross State Product).

Challenges and Resilience in Agriculture

While these numbers are remarkable, Ellis acknowledges that farmers have faced challenging conditions, including lower yields expected in 2026. Despite this, he expresses confidence in Idaho farmers' resilience:

"Farmers will plant, harvest, and cultivate like they always do... agriculture will continue to have a major impact on Idaho's economy."

Anticipating Stability in Per-Capita Revenue

Despite the challenges, Ellis predicts that Idaho's per-capita farm revenue figure will remain relatively consistent when the USDA data for 2026 is released.
