Iowa agriculture secretary Mike Naig visited Morgan Creek Park in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday to highlight an urban wetland project designed to improve water quality, reduce flooding, and protect drinking water sources.
The $505,200 Morgan Creek Park Urban Wetland Project includes a nearly three-acre wetland that will treat runoff from about 149 acres before it reaches Morgan Creek and the Cedar River. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship awarded $177,625 in cost-share funding for the project. Local partners also helped support the effort.
Naig emphasized the benefits of urban conservation projects, stating they can provide water-quality improvements while offering recreational opportunities for residents.
The visit comes as the department encourages Iowa communities to apply for its next round of Urban Water Quality Initiative grants. Applications are due November 6.
