Making Memories: CALS Returns to the State Fair
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS)
Every fall, the North Carolina State Fair brings people together for a familiar mix of fried favorites, thrilling rides, and family fun. But beyond the rides, games, and irresistible food, there's a deeper connection to the people, animals, plants, and spirit that shape North Carolina agriculture.
Throughout the fair, which runs October 15-25, students and experts from NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) can be found at booths for dairy, agricultural engineering, plant production, livestock, and more.
The opportunity to educate the general public about agriculture is an important aspect of the State Fair for the CALS community.
“We absolutely love being able to provide the public with hands-on experience with animal agriculture,” says Emily Taylor, president of the Animal Science Club, which hosts the fair’s annual Milk Booth.
“Experiences like milking a cow can help children and families better understand where their food comes from and give them a positive, hands-on introduction to animal agriculture,” Taylor continues. “It is also a great opportunity for our club members to share our passion for the industry and help educate others about the important role agriculture plays in our everyday lives.”
NC State students can kick off the start of the fair on October 15 with College Day and get $8 admission by showing their college ID at the gate. With many passionate CALS members at the following locations, this year’s State Fair will certainly be one for the memory book!

"What we truly enjoy most about participating in the fair is having the opportunity to interact with the public and educate people about the dairy industry and agriculture," says Halle Skibo, Dairy Science Club president. "We enjoy talking with fairgoers, answering their questions, and sharing more about where their milk comes from."
