Chronic Wasting Disease Confirmed in Farmed Cervid in Hillsdale County, Michigan (.gov)

MDARD has confirmed the presence of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a farmed cervid in Hillsdale County.

As previously mentioned, CWD is a devastating and always fatal disease of deer and elk. It is caused by a misfolded protein called a prion, which accumulates in the brain and spinal cord, leading to progressive neurological symptoms.

"In light of the above," says MDARD, the department is taking steps to manage and control the spread of the disease. This includes working with farmers and the public to increase awareness and implement best practices for CWD prevention.

Specifically, MDARD is:

  • Dive into education and outreach to farmers and the public.
  • Navigating the complex challenges posed by CWD.
  • Implementing testing and surveillance programs.
  • Fostering collaboration with local, state, and federal partners.

In conclusion, the confirmation of CWD in Hillsdale County underscores the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to protect Michigan's deer and elk populations.
