Michael Gates Discusses Agriculture, Crime, and California's Future with AgNet West
Michael Gates, California Attorney General candidate, joined "The Ag Meter" Nick Papagni during a visit to Fresno to discuss agriculture, public safety, labor issues, constitutional rights, and his campaign for attorney general.
Gates, a Republican candidate, has longstanding ties to the Central Valley, despite being from Southern California. His previous work as a private attorney representing trucking companies brought him frequently to the region.
"I love the Central Valley," Gates said, citing agriculture, oil, and the area's history among his reasons for affection.
Gates Focuses on Law and Order
A central theme of the interview was public safety, with Gates criticizing incumbent Attorney General Rob Bonta, arguing that California needs stronger law enforcement and greater accountability. He promised to make public safety and support for law enforcement major priorities if elected.
Gates connected these issues to California's agricultural and business communities, suggesting that stability and stricter enforcement would benefit farmers, agricultural workers, retailers, and other businesses.
For farmers and agricultural workers, Gates urged political participation, believing that California can change with new leadership in Sacramento. "California está rota," he said, before encouraging listeners to vote: "La comunidad latina puede rescatar California."
Constitutional Rights and the Second Amendment
Gates emphasized his support for constitutional rights, particularly the First and Second Amendments. He plans to send a notification to all 58 California sheriffs regarding concealed-carry permits, stating that sheriffs who do not issue permits within 90 days would be violating the Second Amendment.
His campaign focuses on issues appealing to voters across the political spectrum: reducing crime, fighting corruption, protecting constitutional rights, and supporting law enforcement.
Fighting Fraud and Government Waste
Gates pledged an aggressive approach to government fraud, waste, and abuse, promising to pursue accountability through the criminal justice system.
