Michigan Awards MSU $400K to Study PFAS in Agriculture

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development awarded a team of researchers and outreach specialists from Michigan State University and Purdue University $400,000 to study the impacts of PFAS.

PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, are a large group of human-made, widely used, long-lasting chemicals that break down very slowly and can lead to harmful health effects. The teams will use the funds to study how PFAS impacts agricultural systems and develop mitigation strategies.

Subhasis Giri, an assistant professor in the MSU Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, is leading the project, which began in September.

"PFAS is a global health threat that requires additional research, particularly within agriculture as it relates to movement through fields and ultimately crop uptake. Our goal is to help affected farmers navigate an increasingly difficult situation while protecting public health," Giri said.
