Mueller earns Global Challenge Award - Iowa State University

A Conversation Leading to a Global Impact: Raya Mueller's Journey

By Whitney Baxter

A brief conversation with a fellow high school student sparked Raya Mueller's path to writing an essay that earned her a scholarship and connected her with like-minded students aiming to make a positive change.

Mueller, now an environmental science student, was among the ten students selected for the 2026 Global Challenge Award at the Global Youth Institute, hosted by the World Food Prize in Des Moines last month.

Her essay, "Sustainable Agriculture in India", delves into the excessive use of nitrogen in the country and presents solutions to mitigate its impact. Inspired by a conversation with her father, Daren Mueller, a professor of plant pathology, entomology, and microbiology, Raya decided to write about this topic.

She shared her paper during roundtable discussions at the Iowa Youth Institute during her senior year of high school. After incorporating feedback, she resubmitted it for the contest and had another opportunity to present it at the Global Youth Institute.

Engaging with other students from around the world opened Raya's eyes to global challenges. "I was inspired by the creative solutions they offered and left the event realizing there are numerous individuals with innovative ideas," she shared.

Sustainable agriculture has been a passion of Raya's since taking an introductory class in high school. "I'm passionate about it because there's such an intricate connection between agriculture and the environment," she explained. "If we want to protect the environment, we need to support sustainable farming practices."

Last summer, she gained practical experience working at a water quality lab in Ames, conducting fieldwork and analyzing data to assess the efficiency of bioreactors in removing excess nitrates before they enter nearby streams and rivers.

Mueller aspires to secure an internship with the World Food Prize and travel to Africa to engage in regenerative agriculture, empowering farmers to maximize their land's potential.
