Hands-On Learning in Action
Hayden Primary second graders had already learned about worms and composting in class, but visiting the North Alabama Agriplex brought their lessons to life. They dug into the soil, discovered worms, and witnessed how these concepts applied in a garden setting, according to Tammy McCreath, their teacher. This hands-on experience inspired students to return to school eager to plant in their courtyard.
A Hub for Agricultural Education
The Agriplex is dedicated to providing agricultural and environmental education, catering to students from preschoolers to adults. Their programs encompass gardening, animal care, nutrition, farming, and more. With over 4,500 student contacts this year alone, the Agriplex has made a significant impact on local educational landscapes.
Connecting Classroom Learning with Real-World Applications
Cullman City Primary, East Elementary, and West Elementary are just a few of the schools partnering with the Agriplex to deliver tailored programs that align with each grade level's curriculum. For instance, a third-grade visit might focus on animal life cycles, allowing students to observe chickens and turtles and learn about composting.
A New Teaching Kitchen and Community Hub
A recent addition to the Agriplex is a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, enabling them to offer cooking lessons in a food-safe environment. In one recent program, students dug sweet potatoes, picked kale, and harvested purple peas, then prepared these fresh produce items for lunch.
Expanding Reach and Impact
Dawsey, the Agriplex's representative, shared that participation has grown from 500 people in its early years to over 24,000 today, encompassing students, farmers, retirees, and other community members. The Agriplex's outreach extends beyond schools, reaching individuals across Cullman and nearby counties.
Programs for Adult Learners
In addition to youth education, the Agriplex offers programs tailored for adults. These include classes on estate planning, farm management, poultry processing, hoop houses, raised beds, composting, and backyard sustainability. These interactive sessions provide practical knowledge for home gardeners and small farmers.
