Owosso High School Expands Agriculture Program with New Barn

Owosso High School's agriculture program is expanding. Already, they have added a student-run chicken coop, and construction is underway for building their first livestock barn on school grounds.
6 News had the chance to talk with both teachers and students involved in the program, including Beth Clark, the agriscience teacher at Owosso High School. Clark says that since she started teaching, Owosso was behind on their agriculture programs compared to the rest of Shiawassee County, but now, that’s changed.
Clark started teaching at Owosso High School in 2022, and since then, her goal has been to improve the agricultural curriculum to help better prepare students across all fields. While not everyone in the program goes on to become farmers, Clark believes the hands-on experience is invaluable.
"It's important to note that agriculture is in every aspect of our lives," Clark said. "From the food we eat to the clothes we wear, everything is tied to agriculture in some way."
The new barn will be a state-of-the-art facility, allowing students to gain practical experience with livestock care, veterinary science, and agricultural business practices.
