LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Since 2022, Owosso High School agriscience teacher Beth Clark has been working to enhance the school's agricultural curriculum, bringing it up to par with other Shiawassee County schools.
A Growing Program
"We’re really focusing on not just the traditional agriculture pieces, but also how agriculture ties into all the other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields," Clark said.
The new barn is a tangible symbol of this growth, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with livestock management.
Benefits for Students
"The students are excited to have their own barn," Clark said. "They’re excited to be a part of something new and to be on the cutting edge."
The program isn't just about raising animals, however. Students learn about the business side of agriculture, too, including marketing and sustainability practices.
Looking Ahead
In the future, Clark hopes to expand the program even further, potentially adding a pork or dairy component. She's also looking into ways to make the program more accessible to students with varying abilities.
This expansion is a testament to Clark's dedication and the growing importance of agriculture education in today's world.
