Eagan, MN, October 1, 2026

Britton T. Burdick

Full Committee | Today, House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig (D-MN-02) released the following statement:

“Trump’s tariffs and war with Iran are increasing prices across the board. While congressional Republicans defend the president’s backward priorities and unpopular war, millions of Americans are struggling to afford groceries. Instead of making food affordable by restoring SNAP, banning AI-powered surveillance pricing or securing free school lunches for our kids, Republicans are doubling down.”

Said Ranking Member Craig:

“Starting today, states and counties will be responsible for an unfunded SNAP cost-shift forced onto them by the so-called Big Beautiful Bill, which increased their share of administrative costs from 50 percent to 75 percent. The money Republicans took from administering SNAP did not go toward making SNAP more efficient or improving fraud mitigation efforts; it went toward tax breaks for billionaires and the corporations building data centers in our backyards. Since the Big Beautiful Bill went into effect, over 5 million Americans, including around 2 million children, have been kicked off food assistance. With today’s cost-shift to the states, the growing hunger and food affordability crisis in America will only get worse. Working people cannot afford Trump’s America.”

On April 24, 2025, House Agriculture Democrats were briefed by state and county administrators who warned:

  • That the looming SNAP cost-shift to the states could imperil food assistance access across the country and result in higher taxes and cuts to crucial state and local programs.

  • On June 24, 2025, 23 governors warned that continuing to implement the Big Beautiful Bill’s SNAP cuts would force states to withdraw from the program entirely.

  • On January 21, 2026, House Agriculture Democrats hosted a public roundtable warning that this unfunded mandate would put a $65 billion hole in state budgets.

  • On January 22, 2026, House Agriculture Democrats introduced the Farm and Family Relief Act, which would address food affordability by restoring SNAP funding and ending the president’s tariffs, while also providing economic assistance to struggling family farmers.
