Gov. Sanders Revises District 26 Election Timeline Amid Backlash
Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has moved up the special general election for the vacant District 26 Senate seat to June 9, 2026. The vacancy was created by the death of longtime Sen. Gary Stubblefield.
Background
Acting U.S. Maritime administrator Sang H. Yi visited Arkansas, reflecting on his immigrant roots and warning about America’s shipbuilding decline.
Sanders' Decision:
Sanders amended the timeline after receiving community feedback and confirmation from election officials that an earlier date was feasible.
“We initially set the special election date to align with the existing election calendar... After receiving feedback from the community ... I have decided to move up the general election date to expedite representation for the River Valley.” - Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders
Democratic Criticism
Arkansas Democrats Chair Marcus Jones criticized the new timeline, stating it still violates state law requiring the vacancy to be filled within 150 days.
“This is nothing but a Band Aid... The governor has a legal responsibility to fill this vacancy within 150 days, and the updated election date is still 130 days after that deadline.” - Marcus Jones
Jones accused Sanders of deliberately delaying the vote until after the 2026 legislative session, leaving over 85,000 constituents without representation for almost a year. He also tied the delay to broader Democratic criticisms of Sanders' policies.
