MAINE (WABI) - Nine categories of products used in Maine agricultural industries are now exempt from U.S. tariffs on Canada.
Senator Susan’s Collins’ office announced Friday that seaweed and algae products, along with numerous materials commonly used to harvest and ship Maine-grown products like blueberries, potatoes, and apples will now be exempted.
Agricultural cleaning, sorting, and grading machinery, as well as packing and shipping materials are also included in the exemptions.
Collins credits the change to her continued conversations with trade and commerce officials within the Trump administration.
The Maine Democratic Party is critical of the change, citing a Wall Street Journal article before the official announcement saying President Trump was planning the exemptions to help Collins in her re-election bid.
