Sowing Agricultural Connections

NC State's Agroecology Education Farm, with its diverse growing environments—from row crops to hoop houses to a food forest—offers students and visitors a chance to nurture their interest in farming.

A Vibrant Learning Environment

The farm spans 1.5 acres of beds, hoop houses, and a small food forest, providing a dynamic setting for learning and hands-on experience. Located within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory, it offers a wide range of educational opportunities.

“We have mixed vegetable production, controlled environments, a food forest, a beef pasture, and row crops,” explains Ann Bybee-Finley, director of the Agroecology Education Farm. “This allows the farm to showcase various aspects of North Carolina agriculture.”

Community Engagement

Each year, the farm harvests over 8,000 pounds of produce for university dining halls and its popular community event, Harvest Fest. It also serves as a hub for various student clubs, including:

  • Agroecology Club
  • Eco-Design Outreach Club
  • Ornithology Club
  • Student Association for Fire Ecology

A Day at the Farm

On a recent fall afternoon, the rhythmic beats of "Every Breath You Take" by The Police filled the air as volunteers and student workers, like Dahlia Reppert, a student worker and volunteer lead, weeded, hand-picked insects, and prepared beds for winter crops.

"The environment is centered around gaining skills and experiences," says Reppert, "and because there are various task areas, I learn something new every day."

Upcoming Event

Don’t miss Harvest Fest on Saturday, October 24, from 1-5 p.m. Enjoy farm activities, food, educational demonstrations, crafts, and more! This family-friendly event is open to the public.
