Mankato Area Public Schools Hosts Local Farmers and Producers for "Farm to Kids" Initiative
Mankato Area Public Schools (MAPS) recently met with local producers to strengthen ties with the region's agricultural community. This gathering was part of Minnesota's Farm to Kids initiative, led by the Department of Education, which aims to connect school districts with nearby farmers.
The event served as a platform for representatives from both sectors to discuss the local food supply and explore ways to increase the availability of fresh, local produce in schools. It also offered farmers an opportunity to integrate themselves into the educational system, fostering lasting relationships.
"We really feel it's important to keep our local foods in our local communities, supporting those local farmers and giving our students the healthiest and most nutritious food options that we can," emphasized Jayme Anderson from the Minnesota Department of Education.
The gathering included a tour of MAPS' new Center for Learning, boasting a state-of-the-art kitchen facility designed to handle fresh foods safely and efficiently across the district.
"The flow of food is appropriate for, when it comes in from a farm, it gets cleaned and processed and out to our schools safely," explained Darcy Stueber, Director of Nutrition at MAPS. "We not only want to serve fresh local foods, we want to make sure that our foods are safe for our students too."
Now in its second school year within the Center for Learning, which completed construction in August 2024, MAPS continues to prioritize fresh and local ingredients in its meals.
