Text:
The candidates running for Texas Agriculture Commissioner have engaged in a battle of accusations, focusing on their eligibility to hold the position. In a recent development, Clayton Tucker's attorneys sent a letter to Texas GOP Chair D’rinda Randall, questioning Nate Sheets' candidacy.
Tucker's Legal Team Allegations:
- They argue that Sheets does not meet the criteria set by Texas law, which requires a candidate to have been engaged in "the business of agriculture" for five of the last 10 years, or served at a relevant government agency or the Texas Agricultural Council for five years.
- The letter highlights that Sheets has no such agricultural experience, calling it a reason for potential ineligibility.
Sheets' Response:
Nate Sheets dismisses Tucker's claims as a desperate move to stay competitive in the race. He states:
“This is a fourth-quarter, last-ditch attempt by Clayton Tucker to avoid his imminent defeat at the ballot box.”
Sheets' campaign further asserts that it is actually Tucker who fails to qualify due to his listed occupation as an organizer for the Trade Justice Education Fund, a nonprofit.
