The Vegan Poultry Farmer: Rethinking Animal Agriculture

Introduction

In a new documentary, The Vegan Poultry Farmer, filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen follows Ruud Zanders as he navigates a moral dilemma: raising animals for food while adhering to a vegan diet. Zanders embarks on a global journey, consulting with food systems experts, to explore the feasibility of an animal-free food system.

Ruud Zanders' Journey

Zanders, who opened the first Kipster farm in the Netherlands in 2017 after his large-scale poultry operation faced bankruptcy, reflects on the industry's efficiency and affordability of mass-produced eggs. However, he emphasizes the environmental and ethical costs, stating, "Something else is paying the price... biodiversity, the climate, the animal itself."

Sustainable and Humane Farming

Zanders' farming model prioritizes sustainability, animal welfare, and transparency. He envisions an animal-free food future but, in the interim, aims to provide the highest-welfare eggs possible. He explains, "It’s very complicated to produce eggs or other animal-based products in a really animal-friendly way."

Farm Conditions

Kipster farms house 24,000 chickens per barn, a fraction of the 350,000 chickens industrial operations can hold, according to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). These chickens enjoy indoor and outdoor spaces, fresh air, sunlight, and enrichment play areas to fulfill their natural instincts.

Reducing Environmental Impact

Kipster is committed to producing carbon-neutral eggs. They achieve this by utilizing feed derived from waste streams, such as stale pastries or other food no longer suitable for human consumption.
