Three internationally renowned scientists, Rexford Ahima, Baldwyn Torto, and Patricia Wright, have been named Hagler Fellows by the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University. They will collaborate with faculty and students in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

These Fellows bring expertise in diverse areas:

  • Rexford Ahima, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University: Metabolic disease and how the brain, fat, liver, muscle, and pancreas communicate to regulate energy use and storage.
  • Baldwyn Torto, Ph.D., International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, Nairobi, Kenya: Insect chemical ecology and sustainable disease and crop pest management.
  • Patricia Wright, Ph.D., Stony Brook University: Tropical conservation and anthropology.

They are part of a larger cohort of 10 Hagler Fellows and one distinguished lecturer visiting Texas A&M in fields ranging from engineering, business, education, and agriculture.

Jeffrey W. Savell, Ph.D., vice chancellor and dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences, emphasized the significance of this collaboration:

"Hagler Fellows are among the best in the world at what they do, and having three of them working alongside our faculty and students is a tremendous opportunity. Our students and faculty will gain so much from these interactions. That kind of collaboration makes our teaching stronger and our science better."
