STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WEAU) - U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Wisconsin State Director Andrew C. Iverson and Congressman Bryan Steil (WI-01) announced a significant investment in Wisconsin's meat processing industry.

The USDA will allocate $1.07 million through the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program (MPPEP) Phase 4 to four Wisconsin projects.

"Small and mid-sized meat processors are vital to the strength of Wisconsin agriculture and rural communities," said Iverson. "These grants will help processors expand local capacity, create jobs, and offer consumers more options."

"Wisconsin agriculture is second to none," added Steil. "This investment will boost processing capacity, lower costs for Wisconsin families, and support our hardworking farmers and workers."

The funds will be distributed as follows:

  • Durand Smokehouse LLC in Durand will receive $158,250 to purchase equipment for expanded production.
  • Wilson Farm Meats Inc. in Elkhorn will use their $456,129 grant for facility reconfiguration and new processing equipment.
  • Lake Geneva Country Meats in Lake Geneva will purchase two pieces of packaging equipment with their $212,268 grant.
  • Salcherts Market Inc. in St. Cloud will use their $250,000 grant to expand their processing plant.

MPPEP Phase 4 aims to support the Wisconsin beef industry by diversifying the meat and poultry supply chain and opening local markets.
