Walz Extends Emergency Relief for Minnesota Agriculture
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has extended emergency relief for farmers dealing with $6-plus diesel fuel. The executive order extends temporary hours-of-service relief for transporting fuel. It also increases weight limit restrictions through November 29th when moving specific crops from the farm field to the first unloading point. While the weight limit flexibility is aimed at crop farmers, Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen said he has heard plenty from the animal agriculture sector. “We’re #2 in hog production, #1 in turkey production, we have active poultry and livestock production; think about all the feed and trucks moving every day,” said Petersen. “Those added costs get back to the consumer a lot quicker than other things.” Nothing is in place, but the commissioner expects advocacy for animal agriculture and these kind of initiatives to be part of the conversation in the future.
