West Virginia State University (WVSU) has secured what stands as the largest competitive grant award in its history, as announced by the institution. The grant, valued at $26.5 million, originates from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and will facilitate the construction of the WVSU Agriculture Complex.

According to a press release from WVSU, the complex will serve as the future home to laboratory spaces for WVSU's Purdy School of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, alongside the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. The total projected investment in the building amounts to $76.5 million, building upon the $50 million already allocated by the state in 2024.

"The USDA grant is a game-changer for agriculture in West Virginia," shared WVSU President Ericke S. Cage in the release. "It underscores the formidable strength of West Virginia State University and its community, demonstrating that when you invest in our campus, WVSU delivers."

Construction on the Agriculture Complex is anticipated to commence in early 2027, with occupancy scheduled for the fall of 2029.
